October on Netflix has the release of three noteworthy originals; “Beasts of No Nation” a feature film that debuts in theaters and streams on Netflix starting October 16, a new season of the horror series “Hemlock Grove” arrives on October 23, and for kids, there is “The New Mr. Peabody and Sherman Show,” which starts streaming on October 9.

“The New Mr. Peabody and Sherman Show,” is a 13-episode half-hour series is based on the ’60s four-minute shorts from animation legend Jay Ward that first aired in his “Rocky & Bullwinkle Show” from 1961 -64. In those shorts, bespectacled canine Mr. Peabody and his adopted kid compadre Sherman get into the way-back machine, “WABAC” and travel through time to meet famous historical personages. “The New Mr. Peabody and Sherman Show” is inspired by the original shorts and from the 2014 feature film by the same name. In the series they host a zany late-night comedy show broadcast from their swanky penthouse in front of a live studio audience where they interview historical figures. Guests from bygone eras will include Mozart, Napoleon and Edgar Allan Poe, as Mr. Peabody and Sherman embark on new adventures using their famous WABAC machine. “We loved the straight-up lampooning of historical figures,” Executive Producer Dave Smith said. “We mixed it up a lot, while retaining the comedy of the Jay Ward show.”

Beasts of No Nation is a 2015 West African war drama film based on the 2005 novel of the same name by Uzodinma Iweala. The novel follows the journey of a young boy, Agu, who is forced to join a group of soldiers in an unnamed West African country. The film stars Idris Elba, Ama K. Abebrese, Abraham Attah, Grace Nortey, David Dontoh and Opeyemi Fagbohungbe. It was screened in the main competition section of the 72nd Venice International Film Festival where it won the Marcello Mastroianni Award.

“Hemlock Grove” is in its third season, Season1 launched in April of 2013 and Season 2 followed a year later. The show examines the strange happenings in Hemlock Grove, a fictional town in Pennsylvania. Roman Godfrey, heir to the town’s wealthy Godfrey family, befriends the town’s newcomer, Peter Rumancek. Recent brutal murders in the town have stirred up rumors, and the two work together to shed light on the case while also hiding their own dark secrets.

Digital Bucket says,

The Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday night yielded few real surprises but it was still well worth a watch.

We’re big fans of Netflix’s House of Cards however when Kevin Spacey won the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series but wasn’t present to accept it, there was a piece of me that wished the award had gone to Peter Dinklage for Game Of Thrones instead.

Of course I’m hardly objective when it comes to Game. As I’ve written before it just happens to be the best series on TV. Or maybe ever (just one man’s opinion)… See: Hollywood Is Losing The Battle to Epic TV – Like Game of Thrones

In fact, despite also being a huge fan of Downton Abbey, when the popular and soapy Masterpiece Theater drama also beat out Game of Thrones for the Best Ensemble in a Drama Series prize, I was once again vexed. I love Downton Abbey and have watched every episode, but c’mon you tell me which is more difficult; delivering a great performance in a controlled, air-conditioned studio – or delivering an outstanding performance on location in the frozen tundra of Iceland?

Again, objectivity aside, you know I’m right. Which brings me to this latest little Game of Thrones news nugget. According to Stumble Upon, the lovely Sophie Turner who plays the cool-under-fire and rapidly maturing Sansa Stark on Game, will be taking over the role of psychic mutant Jean Grey in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse.

You can read all about it here.

Quentin was pretty damned tweaked. Our interest was certainly piqued. He’s filming in 70mm so get ready to geek. Here’s an update and must read peek:

by Joseph Baxter, Cinema Blend:

It appears that Quentin Tarantino’s long-gestating project, The Hateful Eight, is finally starting to achieve some movement. It is being reported that the film has added an entire slew of new cast members to what was already an impressive dais, including repertory Tarantino cast member and stuntwoman Zoe Bell. Additionally, the film has finally begun to shoot on location in Telluride, Colorado.

According to The Wrap, the film can now add the names of James Parks (an alum from the Kill Bill series), Dana Gourrier, Keith Jefferson, Lee Horsley, Craig Stark and Belinda Owino (who all appeared in Django Unchained), Gene Jones of (No Country for Old Men, The Odd Life of Timothy Green), and of course, the aforementioned Zoe Bell, who, besides appearing in a number of Tarantino films and working as a stuntwoman, would memorably play herself in Tarantino’s 2007 Grindhouse effort, Deathproof as a pipe-wielding badass.
